DSC SEED GRANT

FINANCIAL SUPPORT FOR YOUR DATA SCIENCE PROJECT

Scientists from the University of Bremen can receive special funds to initiate research projects or collaborations in the context of data science in a comparably quick and uncomplicated procedure. The DSC Seed Grant is particularly designed to strengthen the collaboration of working groups from different faculties of the University of Bremen and thus to lay the foundation for interdisciplinary research projects in the context of data science. The overall goal of the DSC Seed Grant is to promote excellent research in the field of data science. The amount of the grant is up to 2,500 EUR per applicant.

GRANT CRITERIA

The DSC Seed Grant is aimed at projects that strengthen the across-faculty collaboration and data science competencies within the University of Bremen. This includes in particular, but not exclusively, the following applications:

  • Implementation of data-driven pilot studies in preparation for (cooperative) third-party funding proposals.

  • Organization of networking events such as workshops, seminars or conferences in the context of data science in Bremen.

  • Inviting researcher to the University of Bremen to initiate or advance data science research projects.

  • Hiring student assistants to implement data science projects.

  • Research stays at other universities or research institutes to advance your data-driven research.

APPLICATION GUIDELINES

Applications can be submitted at any time in German or English by E-MAIL. Please use our Application Form . The application should not exceed three pages.
The following information should be included:

(1) Project description
  • What do you intend to use the grant for? (Application context)
  • Most important aspects of the project
(2) Relevance and objectives
  • What is the added value of the activity for your own research and/or data-driven research at the University of Bremen?
  • What are the specific project goals?
  • To what extent does the project contribute to strengthening data science and/or interdisciplinary cooperation?
(3) Implementation of the project
  • How are the responsibilities and tasks distributed among the participants?
  • Intended work plan / time schedule
  • If applicable, which methods do you want to use or test?
(4) Cost plan
    (5) Statement that the applicant(s) has (have) no other financial resources for the activity.

    CONDITIONS FOR FUNDING

    The DSC Team evaluates and decides upon the applications for the DSC Seed Grant in the order in which they are received. If required, the examination can also take place on a short-term basis. Priority is generally given to projects that offer both the prospect of excellent research and a high degree of interdisciplinary cooperation.

    Doctoral candidates accepted by the respective doctoral committee, postdocs, senior researchers, and professors from all faculties of the University of Bremen can apply for the DSC Seed Grant. Applications can be submitted by individuals as well as research teams. Funding is available once a year and generally up to 2,500 EUR per applicant (i.e. up to 5,000 EUR can be requested for two applicants).

    Funding is available for activities that can be completed within 12 months. Costs for basic equipment (e.g. working place and its equipment) as well as catering are not eligible for funding.

    An application can only be submitted once a previously approved project in the same funding line has been completed and the final report has been submitted.

    A final report (300-500 words), preferably with picture material, must be submitted no later than 4 weeks after the end of the project.

    PROJECTS SUPPORTED SO FAR
