OUR PROFILE AT A GLANCE

The DSC was founded as an interdisciplinary institute for data science at the University of Bremen in October 2019 with the support of the state of Bremen. The DSC connects domain specialists from economics, natural sciences, humanities, engineering, life sciences or sociology with methodological experts from mathematics, statistics, and computer sciences to facilitate the emergence of cross-cutting research projects and fields.

Through this integrative approach, the DSC overcomes disciplinary boundaries and stimulates cooperative research at the intersection of methodology, theory, and application. Therefore, the DSC promotes data-driven research across all disciplines and strengthen the role of data science at the University of Bremen.

OUR THREE PILLARS

The DSC is built on the three pillars RESEARCH, QUALIFICATION and SERVICES, with close interdisciplinary collaboration across all faculties of the University of Bremen serving as foundation.

Within the pillar research, the DSC advances interdisciplinary research in data science to break down the boundaries between domains and create a supportive, collaborative research culture. The pillar qualification reflects the DSC’s commitment to strengthen data science competencies at the University of Bremen and train the next generation by developing data science education and training programs. As part of the pillar services, the DSC offers computing capacities to perform computation-intensive data analyses in research and education as well as methodological and technical support for the implementation of algorithms.

The three pillars are interlinked and progress in one of them will be beneficial for the others. In particular, the cross-faculty collaboration between researchers from application-oriented disciplines and scientists from basic or technological fields will provide new impetus to all three pillars and strengthen data science at the University of Bremen.
