The data science center is looking for reinforcement!

We are looking for a research Associate (f/m/d) on the topic “Evaluation of Sciences”

The Data Science Center at Faculty 3 (Mathematics and Computer Science) of the University of Bremen is offering the following position – under the condition of job release – for a period of 3 years starting as soon as possible:

Research Associate (f/m/d) in the Data Science Center on the topic “Evaluation of Sciences”
 – salary 13 TV-L (100%)

The employment is fixed-term and governed by the Act of Academic Fixed-Term Contract, §2 I (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz – WissZeitVG). Therefore, candidates may only be considered for appointment if they still have the respective qualification periods available in accordance with § 2 (1) WissZeitVG.

The Data Science Center is an interdisciplinary institute at the University of Bremen and acts as hub for data-intensive research, bringing together scientists from different research areas. Our goal is to promote the application of cutting-edge data science methods, in particular from the field of Artificial Intelligence, in all scientific fields, to educate the next generation of data scientists, and to strengthen cooperative research, thereby ensuring the impactful and sustainable use of data in all research areas.

Job Description:
Driven by digitization and the resulting availability of large amounts of data on scientific activities, science itself has become an empirical research object also known as the cross-cutting discipline “Science of Science”. In particular, individual scientific performance is increasingly evaluated using author-level metrics derived from the number of publications and citations (e.g. H-index) or alternative metrics (AltMetrics) such as press releases, postings on social media, transfer activities or (third-party funded) research projects. However, this type of data-based assessment often conveys false correctness, neglects discipline-specific differences, and is not driven by scientific content. This can create false incentives (e.g., quantity over quality) and thus inhibit creativity and innovation in the research process.
As part of the advertised position, the functionalities and limitations of different evaluations metrics in the scientific system will be analyzed, compared, and advanced using novel computational methods. Specifically, citation databases (e.g. Web of Science, Scopus, Google Scholar) and other databases (grants, media communication) will be examined, analyzed and visualized by means of a bibliometric or scientometric analysis.

The following tasks are associated with the position:
  • Developing new data science approaches for the automated measurement and evaluation of scientific output / performance
  • Investigating and assessing established data-based evaluation metrics that are currently used in academia
  • Developing and implementing innovative computational methods for the extraction, integration, and analysis of data collections from different databases
  • Testing and applying data science techniques (e.g. machine learning, deep learning) for the automated identification and visualization of performance-relevant criteria
  • Contributing to the Data Science Center (e.g. offering methodological support to our members)
  • Working independently as well as in an interdisciplinary team in close cooperation with internal and external partners
  • Participating in the acquisition of third-party funding

Required Profile:
  • University degree (Master, Diplom) in the field of computer science, social sciences with a focus on “computational social science”, or a comparable degree
  • Experience in working with databases including the extraction and integration of data
  • Profound knowledge in automated computational analysis and/or in the field of data science (e.g. machine learning, deep learning)
  • Interest in the latest developments in academia and data-intensive research
  • Very good English and German skills
  • Good to very good programming skills (C/C++, Python, etc.)
  • Willingness and ability to familiarize yourself quickly and comprehensively with new contexts
  • Interest in interdisciplinary collaboration and ability to work in a team

We offer you the opportunity to work as part of an interdisciplinary and dedicated team in the innovative field of data science. The job tasks are diverse, the working atmosphere is open and there is the opportunity to regularly participate in further trainings. The research-oriented and dynamic environment of the Data Science Center offers exciting projects and excellent opportunities for networking with other disciplines and institutions. At the Data Science Center, professional and personal exchange is highly valued. We offer a team-oriented and family-friendly environment (including daycare on site) with flexible working hours. You will have a modern, well-equipped workplace. Remote working models are possible.
