DSC hosts workshop at the INFORMATIK 2023 Festival

The Data Science Center hosted a workshop at the INFORMATIK 2023 festival in collaboration with the Digital Science Center (Kiel University) and the Mannheim Center for Data Science (University of Mannheim). The goal of the workshop was to foster exchange between representatives of different data science initiatives, strengthen data science networks and promote future collaboration.

Under the motto “Designing Futures”, the INFORMATIK 2023 festival took place from September 26 to 29 at the University of Applied Sciences for Engineering and Economics (HTW) in Berlin. The event focuses on the design of digital technologies and information systems as well as their relevance for societal, cultural, and economic processes.

This year's program included more than 50 workshops on various topics such as artificial intelligence, robotics, the Internet of Everything, green coding, data literacy and data science. On the last day (September 29, from 9 am to 5 pm), the one-day workshop “Aktuelle Entwicklungen und Perspektiven (an Hochschulen) im Bereich Data Science” took place. The event was one of the eleven workshops organized in hybrid form at the request of the participants of the INFORMATIK 2023. The workshop was organised under the lead of the DSC represented by our spokesperson Prof. Dr. Rolf Drechsler and coordinator Dr. Lena Steinmann. Additionally, the organising committee comprised Prof. Dr. Dirk Nowotka and Dr. Helen Pfuhl (Digital Science Center, University of Kiel), and Prof. Dr. Heiner Stuckenschmidt and Dr. Lea Oberländer (Mannheim Center for Data Science, University of Mannheim).

The aim of the workshop was to foster the interdisciplinary exchange between representatives of different data science initiatives and thus promote the development of a sustainable community network. The workshop was divided into three different sessions about the topics of (1) Data Science Centers, (2) Studies & Training, and (3) FDM & NFDI. In the form of key notes, short speeches and poster contributions, participants from different data science initiatives were able to present and collectively discuss their ideas, experiences, solution approaches and best practices. Nine of the 22 workshop contributions were published in the conference proceedings of the INFORMATIK 2023. A preview of the proceedings can be found here .

Overall, the workshop was a great success and enabled participants to connect and network, thereby laying the foundation for future collaborations.

Thank you to all the workshop participants whose diverse contributions enabled a lively exchange and interesting discussions!
