Navigating Nagoya: A Researcher's Guide to Compliance in Germany

This Data Snack is for you if you work with genetic material from plant, animal, microbial, or other sources. The session is tailored to provide valuable tips and guidance for ensuring compliance in your research endeavors.

In her role as Nagoya Protocol Compliance Officer (NPCO) of the University of Bremen, Janina will talk about the different challenges of the Nagoya Protocol and the EU Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) Regulation (more info here ) for researchers, how best to deal with them and give you tips on how to be compliant.

The day-to-day work of an NPCO deals with all the challenges posed to researchers by the Nagoya Protocol and the EU ABS Regulation, such as dealing with the many different legislations in the provider countries, the length and complexity of the processes for obtaining permits, and various challenges in communication with provider countries. Sometimes also the scope of the EU ABS Regulation differs from the scope of the legislation in the provider countries, making due diligence even more difficult.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Janina Bornemann is Nagoya Protocol Compliance Officer (NPCO) at the University of Bremen. She supports researchers in understanding their Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) / Nagoya obligations and guides them through their ABS processes.
