Why Describing Data and Data Description are not the Same

WHAT’S THIS SESSION ABOUT?

In this session, we will address the first aspect of the DFG-Checklist “Data Description”.

Have you ever thought about how to describe your research data to your grandmother and how to your funding agency?
We will snack on two different concepts that are important for communicating about your data. Describing data and data description sound similar, but they are different in many ways. There is descriptive data about your data, which is a type of metadata. And there is data description, which is concerned with information about file formats and data types. Both have to be considered for your data handling strategy in your (DFG) proposal.

You as researcher know best about your data and the aim of this session is to provide you with the relevant information about what funders need to know about your data description in your proposal.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Sandra Zänkert completed her PhD in Biological Psychology at the University of Regensburg and joined the DSC as a Data Steward in June 2022. She is interested in all topics related to open science, reproducibility and sustainability in the research process. As data steward, she supports researchers from the natural and especially the health sciences of the U Bremen Research Alliance throughout the data life cycle.
